Does this sound familiar to you? My dentist and hygienist mentioned that I had irritated gums as they cleaned my teeth. This is a symptom of gingivitis. Gingivitis can be a stepping stone to major problems in the mouth and gum line. It can lead to periodontal disease, which is a much more serious problem with the potential for actual bone loss.

Halitosis (bad breath) could be related to a gingivitis infection as both are caused by bacteria. Red, swollen and/or bleeding gums characterize gingivitis. These symptoms are most evident upon flossing and sometimes from brushing.

Bacteria cause gingivitis. And bacteria are considered to be responsible for bad breath.

Sometimes, I could even see the bloodstains that the hygienist quietly wiped away with a towel. It was embarrassing enough to know that I wasn't controlling my gingivitis problem, but to know that she was actually trying not to make a big deal out of it was troubling.

I knew my dentist was concerned because she gave me a bottle of alcohol based mouthwash to try and mentioned that she wanted to see how I looked next time. I don't like using it; there is too much alcohol and the taste is not very pleasant. Alcohol may also dry the mucous membranes in the mouth.

The Problem

Bacteria can stick to your teeth and secrete acid onto them contributing to cavity formation. They can also infect the gums, particularly around the gum line, causing gingivitis. This can manifest initially as bleeding and irritated gums.

Having a lot of uncontrolled bacteria multiplying in the mouth may also lead to bad breath, but there is a natural and normal amount of bacteria in the mouth, and you will never completely get rid of them all, nor would you want to.

Theory has it that it is actually the anaerobic bacteria that live in the tongue and throat that produce sulfur that in turn produce hard to get rid of bad breath. These anaerobes create VSCs or volatile sulfur compounds. One type is the familiar rotten egg smell. There are other odors coming from VSCs as well. These sulfur-producing bacteria may feed on certain foods, like coffee, alcohol and meats.

A gingivitis problem can offer a way for bacteria to easily enter your blood stream and that can lead to additional problems. Systemic infections could come from this. Gingivitis can be something that makes your gums bleed easily in a mild case or it can be the root of deep gum recession, leading to bone loss in the worse case scenarios. (Periodontal disease)

Loss of gum line can be discouraging. A friend of mind once described the process as, "getting long in the tooth". Sometimes, people experience this problem by brushing too hard. Had you ever heard of under-the-gum cleanings? This could be part of the protocol your dentist might invoke, should you develop periodontal disease. If you know people that have had an under-the-gum cleaning; they may tell you that it is not very pleasant.

Your dentist can deal with this problem in a variety of ways. However, prevention probably is the best option. Include good flossing and brushing habits - see your dentist for details. And you could add a non-alcohol based mouthwash alternative to your regimen.

I'm currently using a special toothbrush that uses vibration to clean the teeth. This device does a better job than a regular toothbrush in keeping my teeth clean. It does take a little while to get used to because of the vibration. It makes many, many vibrations per second. This helps to give it such wonderful cleaning abilities.

Don't feel sad if you have excellent oral health habits but you still have bad breath. This is common and many people experience this same situation. Oral health products that don't contain sodium lauryl sulfates or artificial flavors that can still kill the bacteria that cause bad breath without using harsh alcohol or tough chemicals may be helpful.

Personally, I go this route whenever I've let my oral hygiene slack a little and I can feel my gums getting soft and red. The recommended amount of xylitol for an oral plan of attack is about five to 10 grams a day. Typically, you won't get this amount from the "xylitol gums" or mints available at the checkout counter -- they often contain minute amounts. Too Much of a Good Thing?

It's important to get enough xylitol if you're attacking a periodontal problem or battling halitosis. But don't throw away your table sugar just yet. Plus, some reports suggest it can be hard on your liver when ingested in large quantities. So, best to stick with the recommended 10 grams or less.

Which brings us to another point -- xylitol is deadly toxic to dogs, who lack the enzymes to process it. Not only does it cause a disastrous drop in canine blood sugar, it then often quickly leads to liver failure. Even a mint or two could poison an adventurous dog. So store your xylitol-containing products with utmost care if you've got four-footed friends around the house.

For most of us, there's a clear correlation between bad breath and smoking: if you smoke, you will have an offensive tobacco odor on your breath that all non-smokers will detect if they are close enough. Smoking apparently inhibits saliva production. These anaerobic bacteria (bacteria which live where there is no oxygen) produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) when they digest proteins for nutrients. So bad breath and smoking go hand in hand because smoking decreases saliva and a decrease in saliva results in an increase in VSC producing anaerobes in the mouth.

Smoking also increases the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Smokers apparently have more cavities that non-smokers. They also have gums that tend to detach from the teeth and recede, leaving exposed roots and spaces between gums and teeth where those VSC producing bacteria can flourish. The roots of the teeth, which are supposed to be protected by healthy gums, are not covered with enamel, so they are more subject to tooth decay. In this scenario, bad breath and smoking result from an unhealthy mouth full of tooth decay, periodontal disease, and proliferating VSC producing bacteria.

It's not just bad breath and smoking that you need to worry about: other tobacco products carry similar risks. Pipe smoking and cigar smoking cause all the same problems as cigarette smoking, and chewing tobacco has all these and more. Smokeless tobacco frequently has sugar added to it, and may contain particles of grit, both of which have implications for oral health. The association between sugar and dental cavities is well known, and chewing on sand will put wear and tear on tooth enamel, also contributing to tooth decay.

So it's not just the odor of cigarette smoke on the breath and that brownish yellow stain on the teeth that you need to think about when you get close to someone else. The best solution is, of course, to quit smoking, but if you can't do that, use a good breath product that will help control the VSC producing bacteria that link bad breath and smoking. Give your jaw a workout. When you eat, chew your food thoroughly, Dr. Replogle advises. Chewing stimulates saliva flow.

Choose your foods carefully. Certain foods are notorious for causing bad breath, such as coffee, alcohol, certain cheeses, and garlic and its close relatives (onions, chives, leeks, and shallots). When you consume these foods, the offensive odor emanates not only from your mouth but also from your lungs, Dr. Replogle explains. The foods contain malodorous sulfur compounds, which enter the bloodstream during digestion, travel to the lungs, and then get exhaled.

Even exemplary oral hygiene can't prevent bad breath that originates in the lungs. So if you're worried about your breath, you're better off avoiding problem foods altogether.

Consider meatless meals. Meat eaters are more likely to have halitosis than vegetarians, according to Dr. Replogle. Meats-especially pastrami, salami, and pepperoni -contain sulfur and other compounds that find their way into the lungs and get exhaled.

Fill up on fluids. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, advises Alan P. Brauer, M.D. Water keeps your mouth tissues hydrated and washes away food residues. Citrus juices are great, too. They have the same benefits as water, plus they stimulate saliva flow.

Try the chlorophyll cure. Ever wonder why chefs garnish entrees with a sprig of parsley? They're perpetuating the ancient Roman practice of chewing parsley after meals. Parsley is rich in chlorophyll, a potent breath-freshener. So are basil and cilantro.

"Refrigerate sprigs of fresh parsley, basil, and cilantro in a glass of water," advises James A. Duke, Ph.D. "Then nibble them throughout the day."

Capitalize on cineole. Cineole is a powerful antibacterial antiseptic found in several medicinal herbs. "The richest source is cardamom," Dr. Duke says. "But spearmint, peppermint, ginger, eucalyptus, rosemary, and sweet annie are also good sources." He suggests munching on a few fresh leaves of spearmint or peppermint or making a tea from any of the other herbs. For ginger, use grated fresh root; for the others, dried leaves will do. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of the herb to 1 cup of boiled water, then allow to steep to taste before drinking.

Make time for thyme. Thyme is another herb with antibacterial properties, thanks to a compound called thymol in its oil. Simply chew some fresh leaves or make a tea from the herb, following the directions in the previous tip.

Be sanguine about your breath. Dr. Brauer recommends rinsing your mouth with Viadent, an over-the-counter mouthwash that contains an extract of the medicinal herb sanguinaria (bloodroot). "Sanguinaria is a powerful antiseptic;" he explains. "It kills bacteria in the mouth and under the gums that contribute to bad breath."
